Organic Asset Creation

 

Hey gamers! A small little update as we juice our game with new assets and effects.

Exclusion Zone: Reclamation is a post-apocalyptic game which mainly takes place in an urban setting. However, let me clue you in on a little bit of worldbuilding you may have already noticed: the further you are from the exclusion zone, the more rural and overgrown the environment is. This means we needed organic assets like trees, bushes, and logs. These assets were modelled in Blender and textured in Substance Painter.

The first asset and our main focus was the trees.

The tree model started with a basic texture which we used when whiteboxing the levels. These textures were updated over time.

The leaves of this tree were also used as bushes, which allowed us to decorate our levels without creating additional assets.


In addition to the tree, a log asset was created.


This log also served multiple purposes both as a vaultable obstacle and as a major part of the level design for level one.

By sizing all these assets differently, changing their rotation, and customizing their placement, just a few models can fill an entire scene! However, in our case, we did make a second tree and added other objects such as rubble and branches.
